He was also voted 12th greatest Finn in the TV show Suuret suomalaiset, largely due to a tongue-in-cheek Internet campaign criticising the idea of the show. The advocates of the campaign thought that because one cannot pick just one person to be the Greatest Finn for their accomplishments.

Vaino Myllyrinne would actually be the "biggest Finn" because of his height (in Finnish, the word Suuri means both "big" and "great"). He had a 15.7 inch hand span, the greatest known. Vaino also had a 2.75 m (9 ft 0.2 in) arm span.

Edouard Beaupre

The 10 of tallest man in the world in history
Edouard Beaupre

Edouard Beaupre (January 9, 1881 – July 3, 1904) was a circus and freak show giant, strongman and a star in Barnum and Bailey's circus. Beaupre was the eldest of 20 children born to Gaspard and Florestine (nee Piche) Beaupre newly founded parish of Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan, Canada and was the first child to be baptized in the parish. Beaupre did not grow normally at birth, but when the first three years of his life, his growth was relatively normal.

However, Edouard's growth rate then increased dramatically, so much so that by age 9 years his height was six feet and by the age of 17 his height was recorded at 7'1". In 1902, his height was measured at 8 feet 2.5 inches and he weighed over 400 pounds. His death certificate described him as being 8'3" (2,52m) tall and still growing.

As a young man, Beaupre quickly grew into a first-rate horseman. Edouard had a dream of becoming a cowboy when he was growing up. When Beaupre was 15 years, he quit school to pursue his dreams of riding the open range. Legend has it that he had to give up to his cowboy dream because his legs dragged on the ground when he rode even who tallest horses. He then decided to use his body size to find advantage to support his family. Edouard would become more known as the "Willow Bunch Giant".

At the urging of others and to help support his family, he went on to tour the North American freak show circuit. Over the years he would be stared to onlookers, wrestle with strongmen and perform feats of strength. His stunt is bent down under horses and then lifted to the shoulders. He would then go on to star in Barnum and Bailey Circus, even though life on the road was not easy for Beaupre. To accommodate his size, Hotel staff make a second mattress with lengthen his bed. He has been spend the latter part of his short life performing in freak shows and circuses reportedly lifting horses as heavy as 900 pounds.

In 1902 Beaupre was diagnosed with tuberculosis. By the time he reached the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, his rapid growth and the disease had taken a heavy toll on him. He became ill and died at a local St. Louis hospital on July 3, 1904. Even at the time of his death at age 23 years, doctors determined that Beaupre was still growing.

Gaspard Beaupre made a trip to St. Louis to retrieve his son's body. When he reached his destination, however, Gaspard turned back when he realized that he didn't have enough money to pay double fare to return home with the body.

Family sure if his son's body was going to be buried in St. Louis or used for medical experiments, but that was not the case. When the circus refused to pay for the transportation costs back to Willow Bunch, Edouard Beaupré's body was embalmed and put on display.

Around 1905, his body made its way to a museum in Montreal and then a circus. When the circus went bankrupt, the body was claimed by the Université de Montreal, whose scientists then discovered the problem of Beaupre's giant status — his pituitary gland had secreted an abnormal amount of growth hormone throughout his body.

In 1975 Ovila Lesperance, Beaupre's nephew discovered the whereabouts of his uncle's body. Lesperance's efforts to return Beaupre's body back to Willow Bunch were unsuccessful, as the university claimed it was still needed for research and refused to assist with the efforts to give Beaupre a proper burial. An agreement was finally reached in 1989. To ensure that Beaupré would not be publicly displayed or used for personal gain, his family insisted that his body be cremated. His remains were brought to Willow Bunch and buried on July 7, 1990.

Ella Ewing

The 10 of tallest man in the world in history
Ella Ewing

Ella Ewing is an tallest woman who born in La Grange, Missouri, the only child of Benjamin F and Anna Eliza Ewing. When a toddler, Ella's family moved to the small Scotland County community of rainbow, southeast of Gorin, Missouri. She was of normal size when still baby and when still young child, with the first signs of any abnormality appearing shortly after her seventh birthday.

At age fourteen she towered over then other children but also her parents and other adults, measuring 6 feet 10 inches. The people of the Rainbow and Gorin area were used to her fast growth and met it with compassion.

Asked to read the Declaration of Independence at a July 4th celebration in Wyaconda, Missouri, Ella was met with shocked gasps, snickers and laughter when she stood to read. Led away in tears, the incident would have a profound effect on her life.

Ewing's maximum height is a matter of dispute, but in several accounts she claimed to be over eight feet tall. Her mothers journal indicated that Ella's growth finally stopped when she was age twenty-two, at 8 feet, 4 inches tall.

However, this is not well documented and as such she is not mentioned in Guinness World Records. The Guinness Book of Records has stated she measured 7 feet 4 and a half inches tall and may have reached 7 feet 6 inches by the time she died.

As typical of many people who afflicted with pituitary gigantism Ella's arms were very long, with her hands and feet were exceptionally big. She wore a custom-made size 24 US shoe and often wore multiple rings on her fingers to mask her abnormal length sleeve.

Al Tomaini

The 10 of tallest man in the world in history
Al Tomaini

Al Tomaini (1912—1962), born as Aurelio Tomaini, he claimed a height of 8' 4½" (2.55 m), however Guinness World Records stated he was really 7'4" (223.5 cm.), but he may have stood 7'6½" (229.9 cm.) at one time.

Al was the son of Santo Tomaini and Maria Bossone. He was one of seven children. At the age of 12 years, he was taller than his father, who stood six feet and one inch (185 cm) in height. He had a great-grandfather in Italy who was also of abnormal height.

His parents called in a physician who by taking X-rays, found that his pituitary gland was working overtime, causing him to become a "giant". The web site showing the Tomaini family tree is: www.tomaini.com

Weighing 356 pounds (162 kg) and wearing size 27 shoes, Al spent most of his life as a circus giant. He was working with a circus at the Great Lakes Exposition in Cleveland, in 1936, when he met his future wife, Jeanie Tomaini. Jeani was born without legs and was only 2 ft 6 inch (76 cm) tall.

After retiring from the circus life, he and Jeanie settled in the circus community of Giant's Camp, Gibsonton, Florida. There he was an extraordinary community booster, donating the town's first ambulance, served as fire chief, helped build the community hall and for a time was president of the Chamber of Commerce.

He was owner and operator of Giant's Fish Camp, a TV repair shop and a tourist-trailer court on the banks of the Alafia River. His death in 1962 at 50 years of age, came after extensive treatment for a pituitary tumor.

Leonid Ivanovych Stadnyk

The 10 of tallest man in the world in history
Leonid Ivanovych Stadnyk

Editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, announced that the title of world's tallest man had been returned to China's Bao Xishun after Stadnyk refused to be measured under the Guinness standard guidelines which require several measurements throughout the course of 24 hours under the watchful eye of a Guinness Book representative.

Leonid Ivanovych Stadnyk, born 1970 or 1971 in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, USSR. He is an Ukrainian man renowned for his stature. He was formerly listed as the world's tallest living man according to Guinness World Records on August 20, 2008.

On August 8, 2007, Guinness book's spokeswoman, Amarilis Espinoza stated that in the 2008 edition of the record book, Mr Stadnyk appeared to be taller than Bao Xishun, a native of Inner Mongolia in China who stands 2.36 m (7.7 ft).

Although he held the title for a few months, Stadnyk refused to be measured and was consequently denied the GWR recognition. Stadnyk refused to be measured because he felt that his gift was from God and is not something that needs to be recorded in a book.

Some others have questioned the legitimacy of his record, noting that Stadnyk has never been officially measured by Guinness World Records, only by the "Ukrainian Book of Records" that says that he measures 2.54 m (8 ft 4.0 in) and that the doctor originally credited by Guinness with confirming Stadnyk's height has denied ever measuring him.

Stadnyk's excessive growth began after brain surgery when he was 12 years old. He developed a pituitary gland tumor which caused the gland to secrete large amounts of growth hormone, resulting in what doctors describe as acromegalic gigantism. Twenty years after the surgery, the doctors have discovered the tumour had mysteriously disappeared and he is currently healthy.

A Pravda news report in Spring 2006 reported that Stadnyk grew 2 cm (0.79 in) in the previous year, not accounting the time between the original Spring 2004 report and Spring 2005.

According to Pravda news, his health is slowly failing in that he needs to hold on to limbs of trees and the side of his house to walk about. His recorded weight is 200 kg (440 lb).

Stadnyk is a certified veterinarian and veterinary surgeon and lives with his mother in the village of Podolyantsi, Ukraine.

He had a standing height of 244 centimeters (8 feet 0 inches) on October 14, 1959, but his height would have been 264 centimeters (8 feet 7¾ inches), assuming normal curvature of the spine. He was later measured at 239 centimeters (7 feet 10½inches) in 1968; he had shrunk in stature due to his worsening spinal condition.

Shortly before Carroll's death in 1969, when his height standing was 234 centimeters (7 feet 8¼ inches). His corrected height was not recorded but may have been close to nine feet.

Robert Pershing Wadlow

The 10 of tallest man in the world in history
Robert Pershing Wadlow

Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940) was the tallest person in history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow is sometimes known as the Alton Giant or Giant of Illinois because of his upbringing in Alton, Illinois.

Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) in height and weighed 485 lb (220 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood was due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death.

Wadlow's size began to take its toll. He needed leg braces to walk and had little feeling sick in his legs and feet. Despite having like these difficulties, Wadlow never also used a wheelchair. On June 27, 1940 (eighteen days before his death), he was measured at 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) by doctors C. M. Charles and Cyril MacBryde of Washington University in St. Louis.

Wadlow was an American celebrity; he was well-known due to his 1936 U.S. tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus and his 1938 promotional tour with the INTERCO. He continued participating in tours and public appearances.

Wadlow was a Freemason. In 1939, he petitioned Franklin Lodge #25 in Alton, Illinois and by late November of that year was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F & A.M.

On July 4, 1940, while making a professional appearance at the Manistee National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened and then on July 15, 1940 he died in his sleep at age 22.

An estimated 40,000 people attended Wadlow's funeral on July 19. He was buried in a 10-feet-long (3.0 m), with half-ton coffin and needed twelve pallbearers and was interred in a vault of solid concrete. Wadlow's family members were concerned for the sanctity of his body after his death and use lengths coffin and heavy to ensure it would not be disturbed or stolen.

A life-size statue of Wadlow stands on College Avenue in Alton, Illinois, across from the Alton Museum of History and Art. The statue was erected in 1986 in honor of the hometown schoolboy. Another statue of him stands in The Guinness Museum in Niagara Falls and the Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum in Myrtle Beach, New York City and Genting Highlands . A group of 6 life-size models made before his death by artist James Butler, exist and are shipped and displayed in replica caskets.
